First win of 2013!

We got lucky and won our first race of the year last night at Charles Town Race Track in West Virginia. This is the third horse we have ever run there and our first winner. PRIZE WINNER is a homebred and with this win took her career earnings over $200,000.

We went from somewhere in the high 1200’s in the trainers standing to 316. Last year we finished the year in the trainers standings at 121 after getting as high as 103.

Oaklawn Park canceled the races for Saturday and Sunday due to excessive rain there and the poor track condition due to a sink hole that popped out right at the 7 1/2 pole over the tunnel.

It has rained in Kentucky for the past three days. If the temperature had been colder here, we would now be up to our eyeballs in snow!

October Recap!

October has ended and we have surpassed a million and a half for stable earnings this month (year to date). We are not at our all time high, but getting close. We are up to 42 winners which is below the number of winners we had in 2011. The Hoosier Park meet ended leaving us with 13 wins and 21 seconds. We were less than $20,000 behind the leading money winning trainer. We had set a goal of 15 wins for the meet and got oh so close. We won one stake and finished second in a couple of others. The last week was kind of typical of our meet. We had 4 seconds (one was a win and they took our number down and placed us second) another filly HARBOR CAT also finished 2nd in “The Miss Indiana Stakes” and our homebred filly DREAMIN BIG who was on a four in a row winning streak finished 3rd in the $200,000 Frances Slocum Stakes. This was the filly that was involved in the gate debacle and has never been the same since colliding with the gate they didn’t get moved out of the stretch. It is a shame as this was the race we had been pointing for all year and she had never finished anything less than 2nd in her career until the other day.

Churchill Downs opened on Sunday October 28th, the day after Keeneland and Hoosier Park closed. It runs until Saturday after Thanksgiving and is a great place to claim a horse to run through the winter. We are going to Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas for the winter where maiden special races will run for a purse of $53,000 which is more than either Keeneland or Churchill. If you have never been t Hot Springs, this is a great spot to come and go to the races. The town is very welcoming and the atmosphere is casual. All the locals are glad to see us back every year. One of the few places where the town really puts out the welcome mat for horseman.

The November Breeding Stock sale begins at Fasig Tipton on Sunday, November 4th and Keeneland begins on Tuesday the 6th. It is a mixed sale. They sell racing stock, broodmares, weanlings and is a great place to get a horse. If you need any tax breaks for the year, this is a good spot to fill the need.

Two more months left in 2012 and we will be racing around this area and try to stock up for Hot Springs.

The Breeders Cup begins Friday and is held at Santa Anita this year. I haven’t gone through all the races, but I do like a filly in the Juvenile Turf tomorrow. SPRING VENTURE has raced three times in Canada and has won all three. She has ran on grass and poly. Still reading the form, so may post again if I find anything else I really like. But, bet with both hands. Good Luck!

Remember to set your clocks back on Saturday and go out and support your local (or any) track.

Won 3!

The stable has had a good week.  We won three, two at Hoosier Park (one was a 2 yr. old maiden) and one at Penn National. If you want to see a great race watch the Penn National race and ride (7th race #6 on 10/18). If it this doesn’t get you pumped you need to check your blood!

Total stable purses have now gone over $1.4 for the year.

Hoosier and Keeneland wrap up next week and then on to Churchill’s meet. Great place to claim.

Dreamin Big and the tractor

Attached is a link to a race ran the other night at Hoosier Park that you would never think could happen to you. After clicking on the link, you will need to choose your track (Hoosier Park) and your date (September 27, 2012) then your race (#8).  Our nice filly DREAMIN BIG was in this race on Thursday evening. It wasn’t really the race we wanted to be in but they didn’t use the filly race so we were running against colts. We were the second favorite and she has won her last four races in a row (which is a great credit to her). Watch and listen carefully.

She was the filly that veered to the right. She did brush the gate with her left neck and shoulder. She does have some scrapes on her left neck and shoulder. The rider flew off into the starting gate and is ok. The filly made a u turn and ran around the track loose until they caught her. Miraculously she doesn’t seem any worse for wear. I will give Marlon St. Julien a ton of credit for his ride and guidance in an unbelievable situation. As unbelievable as it sounds, none of the Jockeys were hurt. You can see two of them ending up in the infield. One of the horses did fracture a sesamoid (ankle) and is done racing but should be able to be saved for a stallion (which is little consolation) as he has won over $350,000 in his career.

Here is the tracks story. They had a brand new tractor (less than 3 days old) and the transmission got stuck and or stalled and killed the engine. The back up tractor (which was suppose to pull it in an emergency) couldn’t move the new tractor as it was not in neutral. Now if you have had a new car or tractor in the last year or two, you know that the dashboard is nowhere near what it was like a few years back as it is all computer ran. A simple radio adjustment is no longer simple. The point is that it takes a while to adjust to the new technology. The starter is also the track superintendent (as they fired the previous one a month ago) and in my opinion should not have both of those jobs. He was at the gate, the track vet was at the gate and the outrider was at the gate all of whom have radios, yet none were used. Also, the outrider stood at the gate and never pealed back around the track to warn the riders. The Stewards never hit the switch to turn on the emergency siren that is used when a horse is loose or in any other race track emergency. The track in all their generosity has to give you nothing. They gave each horse owner $750.00 which is what they give if a race is canceled after the races have begun that day. They also told us they are going to pay the jockey fees which is $100.00 each. I don’t think this will be the end of this debacle.
