September 2013

September was a good month, our second best month of the year winning $225,000 with 5 winners. Mister Pollard had two wins with the second win being the $85,000 added Hillsdale Stakes for Indiana Bred 2 yr. olds going three quarters. Penny and I bred Mister Pollard and two groups bought into him last winter, Falcon Racing and Scott and Jim Farrar.

Mister Pollard has won three of his five starts this year and $119,000 in purses. As of this morning he ranks 36th in the nation on 2 yr. old earnings list, but I am sure that has changed after racing today. While I am number 43 on the list of trainers for 2 yr. old earnings in North America with almost $250,000. Right between Tom Amoss and Graham Motion who I know have a lot more 2 year olds in training than I do. So I am keeping in pretty good company.
The stables total earnings are over $1.1 million for the year so far.
Churchill just ended their first ever September meet, which I will venture to say they will report was quite successful. Kentucky Downs just ended their 5 day meet which was reported to be extremely successful and drew some good crowds.
Now we move into the final 3 weeks of Indiana Downs which offers some large purses. Keeneland will open their 3 week fall meet on Friday, October 4th with a Breeders Cup prep weekend. I am sure they will have good crowds and fancy woman.
After Churchill’s fall meet in November I plan on going to Oaklawn Park for the winter and I am looking for horses right now. The minimum purse will be $16,000 and maiden special will be $55,000.
The yearling sales were very successful at Keeneland this fall with records in almost every category. There are some more sales in October and November.

STABLE SURPASSES ONE MILLION DOLLARS IN EARNINGS FOR 2013 WITH TWO WINNERS AT INDIANA DOWNS

Great day in racing at Indiana Downs. SNEAKIN AWAY wins the 7th race for owners Jerry Merritt and Penny Lauer taking his earnings over $200,000 lifetime. He is an Indiana Bred running in open company allowance so he was awarded 40% more in purse money ($47,120),  Owners Ron and Kay Grothaus take home a winner with PADDY’S NOTES winning the 8th (Indiana Bred allowance race $41,000) wire to wire. This is the colts third win at the meet.

MISTER POLLARD

We had another 2 Yr. Old Winner today. MISTER POLLARD who broke his maiden in July came back and won a NW2 Allowance at Indiana Downs today. He was another Indiana Bred winning in open company which increases the purse by 40%.

Congratulations to owners Scott and Jim Farrar, Falcon Racing (Tony Medley, Mike Johnson et al) and Penny Lauer.

AUGUST ENDS

The stable had a good month winning six races and over $100,000 in purse money bringing the yearly total to over $929,000. We broke a couple of maidens, one being a two year old and we placed in a stake this month.
We have a big month coming up. Churchill Downs runs its first meet in September replacing Turfway, and Kentucky Downs runs a five day meet on the European all grass course. Then we have the twelve days of yearling sales at Keeneland. A great spot to stock up your stable for next year. On the 6th of this month, Penny and I will be attending the National Awards Dinner for the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association in Lexington as we have been selected as the 2012 Indiana Breeder of the Year. This is the second time we have been honored with this title.
The kids have all gone back to school (we still have two in college) and football has begun. Sara is on her last semester doing her student teaching and is also taking grad classes getting a jump on her masters. Abby has moved from University of Kentucky to Morehead State where she seems to be happier.
We have started to break yearlings on the farm and are finishing up weaning this years foals. Fall is right around the corner.
Oaklawn in Hot Springs Arkansas has released some information regarding the winter meet. The purse for maiden special will be $55,000 which is up from last year. The bottom purse will be $16,000 which is also up from last year. You have to been thinking ahead and stock up this fall.
